Knights of Columbus Donates $25,000 for New Ultrasound Unit |
|

Since 1993 the pregnancy resource center has offered limited obstetrical ultrasound to women who are experiencing unintended pregnancies. This has proven to be very effective in helping protect women's health and empower many women to choose life for their preborn babies! More than 2500 ultrasounds have been performed in the 17 years since we began this service. Last year alone 269 ultrasounds were performed and 183 (68%) of these expectant mothers told us they had changed their minds about considering an abortion.
Understanding how important the latest technology is to the life-saving efforts of the PRC, the Knights of Columbus Michigan State Council stepped up in a big way to upgrade our ultrasound technology--donating $25,000 for the purchase of a new state of the art ultrasound unit. The state of the art ultrasound unit that is being purchased is replacing a unit that is at least 15 years old.
“We were absolutely thrilled when the Knights contacted us with this idea. The funds they raised will allow us to update our current ultrasound system and continue providing this high-quality medical service to the Grand Rapids Community,” says Jim Sprague, Executive Director of the
Pregnancy
Resource
Center .
The fundraising efforts of the local and state-wide chapters of the Knights are matched by the “Supreme” (the nation-wide order) and the new system will be arriving in July.
“Reports indicate that up to 90% of women considering an abortion choose to have their baby after seeing an ultrasound image. They hear their baby’s heart beat; they see their baby’s head and fingers. They know it is a child, not a choice.” - Supreme Knight, Carl A. Anderson
Ultrasound units produce pictures that are, quite literally, worth a thousand words. And a better unit produces better pictures.
One client at the PRC was intending to pursue an abortion, saying, “I just don’t see that I have another option right now.” However, during her ultrasound, Mary saw her tiny baby move on the screen AND she heard his heartbeat. Her conclusion: “You know, to terminate two lines on a pregnancy test is one thing, but this…this is, well…this is another matter.”
Lines on a test strip can be ignored but a moving baby and a heartbeat – that is a person!
What the Knights have done is opened an even clearer window to the womb and a chance at life for a baby whose fate may otherwise be hanging in the balance.
